Steal Like an Artist - Discover Your Voice

“Nobody is born with a style or a voice…In the beginning, we learn by pretending to be our heroes. We learn by copying.

We’re talking about practice here, not plagiarism - plagiarism is trying to pass someone else’s work off as your own. Copying is about reverse engineering. It’s like a mechanic taking apart a car to see how it works.” - Steal Like an Artist, by Austin Kleon PG 33

You might start by copying the styles and techniques of other writers to walk in their footsteps and deconstruct their methods. Copying is a legitimate way to gain understanding and skill, but it becomes plagiarism when you use someone else's words, ideas, or creations without permission or proper credit and present them as your own. Finding your voice is a process that happens every time you show up at the desk. The more you show up at the desk, the better you get at honing your voice.
