How Does OpenAI Measure Up To Google?
Artificial intelligence has been decades in the making but recent advancements have catapulted it forward. ChatGPT is a game-changer in a field dominated by Google for more than two decades.
Unlike most developers that use AI for internal use, OpenAI made it accessible for mainstream use. ChatGPT draws large swaths of data and synthesizes search results into a single human-sounding result, and users don’t have to sift through links to find information.
Accuracy is ChatGPT’s greatest weakness. It is still vulnerable to factual errors, and it doesn’t cite its sources. Users still need to do their due diligence and fact-check the results.
OpenAI has more of an edge than traditional tech companies with their established business models and reputations at stake. Google’s search engine has become, as one writer put it, “a spam-ridden, SEO-fueled hellscape.”
Currently, it doesn’t run ads on the platform, but unless OpenAI finds another way to fund it, it’s only a matter of time before it turns to advertising for revenue. Most platforms start out ad-free but eventually depend on it, compromising the quality of their services.
Microsoft has made the momentous move to invest millions in OpenAI, and the tech startup may make its place among the tech giants.
