Is Gi Better Than No Gi? Jiu Jitsu at SBG Whitefish

As a beginner BJJ student, you may wonder whether to choose between Gi versus No Gi BJJ training and the difference between the two. The two uniforms are different, and jiu jitsu techniques will vary depending on the uniform.

The heavy Gi top offers grips that make it easier to control your opponent and is a great way to work on your defensive game. Gi training allows you to develop a solid defensive game because those accessible grips enable you to defend and escape. You can work your offensive game and hone your technique without the advantages of grips in No Gi training.

Proponents of No Gi point out that in a real-life fighting situation, you won't have the thick collars and sleeves to get grips, making Gi training unrealistic for self-defense. That may be true in warmer climates. However, that argument doesn't apply to Montana life, where the winters are long and the days are cold. People wear jackets throughout the year, and Gi training could save your life.

The most important thing is that you get your jiu jitsu training off to the right start. As a beginner student at SBG Whitefish, you'll begin your jiu jitsu training in a Gi with our BJJ Foundations program. The skills you develop in BJJ Foundations give you the strength and confidence to succeed in jiu jitsu whether you choose Gi or No Gi Grappling. Training in both uniforms provides more tools and techniques to your jiu jitsu training. You won't have to limit yourself to one training style, and you get to enjoy a versatile and well-rounded practitioner.

At SBG Whitefish, we are passionate about all aspects of BJJ training, and we train in both uniforms to learn all that jiu-jitsu has to offer.
